Die dritte Generation des 6er BMW ist seit 2011 auf dem Markt und wie gewohnt als zweitüriges Coupé (F13) und als Cabrio (F12) erhältlich. 2012 folgte eine viertürige Coupé-Version namens Gran Coupé. Konkurrenten des Gran Coupé sind vor allem der Audi A7 und der Mercedes CLS. Cabrio und Coupé treten gegen Mercedes SL und Jaguar XK an.
