Auf der IAA 2015 präsentierte BMW den neuen 7er. Im Vergleich zum aktuellen Modell wird die neue Generation um rund 130 Kilogramm leichter. Möglich wird die Gewichtsdiät durch einen neuen Materialmix aus Stahl, Aluminium, Carbon und Magnesium. Dabei können die Münchener auch auf die Erfahrungen zurückgreifen, die sie mit i3 und i8 gesammelt haben. Das Design orientiert sich am Vorgänger, fällt jedoch im Vergleich zum aktuellen Modell flacher und breiter ausfallen. Ebenso werden die Scheinwerfer und Rückleuchten schmaler. Das Facelift mit größeren Nieren, Hinterachslenkung und neuer Technik hatte 2019 seinen Marktstart.
